Classic Transfer: Arsenal sign Thierry Henry

On August 3, 1999 Arsenal swooped to sign Juventus misfit Thierry Henry for £11million. Highly-rated but unable to make an impact during an eight month stay in Serie A after a move from Monaco, Arsene Wenger was happy to take a punt on a player he’d given a debut to at his former club. The outlay was worth every penny. Signed as the Gunners needed a replacement for Nicolas Anelka, the man who had struggled on the left wing in Turin, was moved into a central role by Wenger but no goals in his first eight games set alarm bells off.
