Southampton are reportedly ready to enter the race to sign midfielder Jack Wilshere, who appears likely to leave Arsenal on a free transfer.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere has reportedly emerged as a summer transfer target for Southampton.

Arsenal have allegedly offered Wilshere the chance to extend his contract but with no guarantees over the first-team football, it has been suggested that the player will take the chance to leave the Emirates Stadium.

A number of clubs are said to be keen on the England international - including Everton, West Ham United and AC Milan - but according to The Mirror, Southampton are ready to enter the fray.

Reports have suggested that the Saints have missed out in the race to sign James Maddison from Norwich City, leaving manager Mark Hughes to target another playmaker in the centre of the pitch.

Wilshere could potentially be tempted into a switch to St Mary's, having already spent a season on the south coast with Bournemouth.
