English football champions' title celebrations down the years: in pictures

After Chelsea clinched the Premier League title courtesy of their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, we take a look back at some of the previous celebrations of the winners of England’s top flight.

  • 2011-12

  • 2003-04

    Patrick Vieira strips down to his pants as the Arsenal players celebrate winning the title after a 2-2 draw against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. The Gunners went through the season without a single defeat – the first team ever to do so in a 38-game league season – and subsequently became known as the Invincibles. Their record during the season was won 26 drew 12 lost 0 and they topped the table with 90 points, 11 points above second-placed Chelsea.

  • 1997-98

    Ian Wright opens the dressing room window to speak to the fans outside after their 4-0 victory over Everton at Highbury gave Arsenal their first title in seven years. It was Arsène Wenger’s first full season in charge and the victory meant he was the first manager from outside the British Isles to win the league title. The Gunners went on to beat Newcastle United 2–0 in the FA Cup final and win Arsenal’s second double.

With Manchester United only managing a 1-1 at West Ham, it did not matter that Blackburn Rovers lost 2-1 at Liverpool and the Lancashire club won their first title in 81 years.

    Arsenal celebrate after winning the First Division in the most dramatic fashion with a 2-0 victory over title rivals Liverpool at Anfield. Michael Thomas’s goal, scored in the last minute of the last game of the season, meant the Gunners won the title on goals scored.

  • 1985-86

    Liverpool’s Mark Lawrenson celebrates with goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar after their 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge meant Liverpool pipped their Merseyside rivals Everton to the title. A week later Everton lost out again to their neighbours when when Liverpool beat them 3-1 in the FA Cup final to win the double.

  • 1981-82

    Liverpool celebrate with the trophy after beating Tottenham 3-1 to wrap up the title for the 13th time in their history, fighting off competition from Ipswich Town, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Their season of triumph was overshadowed, however, by the death of their legendary former manager Bill Shankly who suffered a heart attack in late September.

    After a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday, the Spurs players celebrate with champagne in the White Hart Lane dressing room after winning their second league title. Three weeks later Spurs beat Leicester City 2-0 in the FA Cup Final to complete an historic double – the first side to achieve such a feat in the 20th Century.
