Jorginho signs Arsenal contract extension after rejecting Serie A return

  • Mikel Arteta thrilled with ‘unique’ player’s short-term contract
  • Midfielder, 32, had been linked to a return to Italy

Arsenal have announced that Jorginho has signed a short-term contract extension, with the Italy midfielder believed to have turned down the opportunity to return to Serie A.

The 32-year-old has played an important role this season as Arsenal attempt to win a first title for 20 years, having made most of his 10 Premier League starts since the turn of the year as Mikel Arteta’s side battle with Manchester City.

Jorginho’s agent had hinted in March that his client could return to Italy, where he played for Verona and Napoli before joining Chelsea in July 2018 for an initial £50m.

However Arsenal were keen to retain a player with vast experience given the youth of Arteta’s squad, and Jorginho agreed terms at the end of last month to stay for what is believed to be another season. He originally signed an 18-month deal when he moved from Chelsea in January 2023.

“We’re delighted that Jorgi has signed a new contract with us,” said Arteta. “Jorgi is such an important part of our team, a role model with great leadership skills and a unique playing style ability which makes everybody better around him on the pitch. We’re very pleased that Jorgi and his family have committed with us and we’re all excited to continue this journey together.”

The sporting director, Edu, said: “He represents what we stand for here at Arsenal with his professionalism and success. I know everyone at the club will be very excited that Jorgi will continue to be with us, not only the players and coaches but all the staff behind the scenes as well. It’s great that Jorginho remains with us, as we continue building to be better and stronger.”
