FOOTBALL'S summer spending spree is set to nudge a record £1BILLION by the time the transfer window shuts on Tuesday night.

Manchester City lead the way and their spending could rise to £150m if they sign Kevin De Bruyne

Clubs desperate to buy success are expected to launch a frantic 48 hour gold rush over BANK Holiday weekend that is expected to easily overtake the £844million they splashed out last summer.

That totalled an all-time high then. But with moneybags Manchester City leading the way by forking out more than £150million on five players - if they get Kevin De Bruyne - the overall 'bill' will end up going through the financial roof.

The incredible money-go-round shows no sign of slowing down over the next 48 hours or so with virtually every top club in the country gambling on a big return for their money.

City top the summer spending league with neighbours Manchester United, who have also splashed out nearly £75million. Arsenal are the only Premier League club to have spent less than £10million - so far!

The final mind boggling bill won't be known until late on Tuesday night after a day of wheeling and dealing drama that will be played out live on television.

Sky TV will send 25 reporters the length and breadth of the country - backed by another 200 studio staff and presenters - highlighting record breaking deals that will be the biggest anywhere in the world.

Although the transfer window mayhem will also be waged throughout Europe it will almost certainly be dwarfed by the amount of money spent here.

The Premier League - and the cash riches it offers for players - remains the biggest draw in the world.

And that will be reflected when the window shuts officially at 6pm on Tuesday.
