Arsene Wenger has confirmed Jack Wilshere has had minor ankle surgery.

However, the Arsenal manager denied the procedure was another setback for Wilshere who has suffered a series of injuries to his left ankle over the last few seasons.

"Jack has had surgery to take two screws off his ankle because they were irritating him but it's a very minor procedure - he'll be out for a few days.

"It was irritating his ankle so they had to take them off.

"It was planned to be done at the end of the season but because he had an irritation we decided to do it now," he said.

"If he was back for next weekend it would be quick - but it's days not weeks."

Sky Sports News HQ pundit Tony Cascarino told The Morning View Wilshere may need to adapt his playing style to avoid further injury.

"I think Jack has got injured by being slightly reckless - he has to be careful with the way he tackles.

"He gets his legs in positions where one gets isolated and when he gets tackled he rolls his ankles and it's happened several times to Jack.

"But hopefully this will be the start of a recovery where we'll see him play a lot of games back-to-back."
