Former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen to be handed new Barcelona contract - Reports

Former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has done enough to earn a new contract with Barcelona, according to reports in Spain. The Belgian, who made 110 appearances for the Gunners in a five-year stint at the Emirates, was expected to leave the Camp Nou this summer with first-team opportunities limited under Ernesto Valverde. But despite only featuring twice since January, Vermaelen's performances for the Spanish giants have done enough to merit a new contract extension, according to Sport. The 32-year-old struggled with injuries in his first three seasons at Camp Nou but has managed 16 appearances in 2017-18 and is yet to suffer defeat in La Liga this term.
