World Cup: Monreal's Spain are knocked out

Nacho Monreal's Spain were knocked out of the World Cup on Sunday after a shock penalty shootout defeat to Russia.   Our left-back was an unused sub as Fernando Hierro's side dominated straight from the off and they took the lead through a Sergei Ignashevich own goal in the 12th minute. But despite remaining firmly in control and creating a host of chances, Spain were pegged back before the interval when Artem Dzyuba converted from the spot. The 2010 winners pressed throughout the second half and then extra-time but could find no way through, so the game went to penalties.
