How Arsenal changed transfer policy to beat Barcelona to Dennis Bergkamp

Alan Sugar was feeling bitter. It’s the summer of 1995 and the Spurs chairman’s head is spinning. He has just had to fork out £4.5 million on Chris Armstrong to prise the striker away from Crystal Palace and fill some of the void left by Jurgen Klinsmann. The German World Cup winner sparked a blaze of goals at White Hart Lane before availing of a release clause in his contract after a single season in England and returning to his homeland with Bayern Munich. In the national Press, Sugar decried the transfer fees as “lunacy”, calling on the Football Association to somehow get a handle on the spiralling costs.
