Arsenal failed in bid for defensive target

Arsenal failed with a bid for France international Djibril Sidibe, it has been revealed in the Mirror. The paper reveals that the Gunners pursued the then Lille player throughout the summer and made a bid for him, but it wasn't enough to hijack Sidibe's move to Monaco. It was concerns over a lack of playing time that encouraged Sidibe to stay put according to the paper, although they also cite his desire to establish himself on the right hand side of defence as a reason – Arsenal were apparently interested in using the versatile defender as cover for experienced fullback Nacho Monreal on the left too.
