Interview

'We executed our gameplan perfectly'

Having seen us stretch our unbeaten run to 12 games, Joe Montemurro was keen to praise his side for their performance in beating Reading 3-1.

The manager had expected it to be the "toughest game of the season" but we ran out winners after goals from Kim Little, Dominique Janssen and Danielle Van de Donk.

This is what he told Arsenal Media after the game:

on the team’s performance…

Reading are a very good team and they are a side that poses a lot of problems, with regards to the way that they structure themselves tactically. They’re a little different to other teams and they have some very good players. We had a gameplan and over the first half, I think we executed it perfectly. I don’t think they had a shot on goal and we had another two one-on-one’s which could have really finished the game off, but at the moment it’s about managing the group. We’ve got a lot of games day after day, every three days, so it’s about managing the group and making sure that we’ve got everyone as fit as possible for each game.

on whether it was the hardest game of the season so far…

In patches, yes, it was one of the most difficult games of the season. In patches I think we were good in our understanding of when we should go forward and when we needed to hold the game up, but again, they’re a very good team and we had to be on our guard. But we kept to our structure and it happened for us.

on the team’s positive reaction after conceding…

It happened at the weekend when we were on top and it happened again today. It was a pity that we didn’t put the game to bed earlier. I can’t think of many teams that have done this, but in the two times that test has been handed to us, we’ve managed to overcome it

on Danielle Van de Donk’s performance…

Danielle is a really intelligent footballer and a great girl. She suits our style perfectly and she deserves everything she gets because she works so hard during the week and understands tactically what we need to do and she gets the reward for it.

on what he’s expecting from bottom club Yeovil…

They’re all challenges. If we play our football then it’s okay because we’ll overcome teams, but the reality is that the squad is now needing to be managed properly and we have everyone fresh for the games we need. Next week is another big week against Liverpool and Birmingham.
