Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says that he remains "hopeful" of making England's World Cup squad, despite not featuring for the Three Lions since 2016.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has said that he still holds out hope of earning a place in England's World Cup squad.

In March, Wilshere was rewarded for his form with the Gunners with a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the matches with the Netherlands and Italy, but a minor knock led to the player withdrawing from both fixtures.

Wilshere has not represented his country since Euro 2016, but the playmaker has acknowledged that he is still keen to secure his place on the plane to Russia.

The 26-year-old told Sky Sports News: "I am hopeful, but it all comes down to Gareth and his coaching staff.

"I have always said before how proud I am to play for my country. I haven't done it for a while, I was probably going to do it then I picked up a little knock, which wasn't ideal, but I am hopeful of going. Am I confident? I am not sure, but I want to go."

Wilshere has made 28 starts and nine substitute appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season.
