World Cup: Ospina’s Colombia record first win

David Ospina

Two of our players’ countries were in action on Sunday. Scroll down to find out how they got on.

David Ospina kept a clean sheet to help Colombia to their first win at this year’s World Cup, against Poland. The pressure was on La Tricolor following their opening-game defeat to Japan, but they responded well and took an early lead through Yerry Mina.

Ospina then made a crucial stop to preserve Colombia’s lead, getting down quickly to keep out Robert Lewandowski from close range, before Radamel Falcao made the most of his opportunity to double his side’s advantage.

Juan Cuadrado then sealed the three points in style, racing onto a through ball to bend into the bottom corner and get Colombia off the mark at this summer’s tournament in Russia.

Earlier in the day, Danny Welbeck was an unused substitute in England’s record World Cup win over Panama. John Stones and Harry Kane scored two goals apiece and Jesse Lingard added a fifth during an action-packed first half, with Kane completing his hat-trick after the restart.

Felipe Baloy then netted a late consolation, as England recorded an impressive three points to lift them to first in Group G.

Ospina will be back in action for Colombia on Thursday when they face Senegal in a must-win game, before Welbeck’s England take on Belgium later that day.
