Gillard to lead Arsenal under-18s

Our resident Arsenal youth expert, Jeorge Bird, has revealed that Ken Gillard has been handed the reins at under-18 level following Kwame Ampadu’s move to Monaco.

Gillard, who has been Ampadu’s assistant since 2016, was the main man in the dugout during the under-18s 4-2 win over Reading at the weekend and is expected to get the gig on a full-time basis should he impress Per Mertesacker in the coming weeks.

Ampadu, who spent three years at Arsenal as a player between 1988-91 before re-joining as a coach in 2012, was hired by Thierry Henry, with whom he’d previously worked at London Colney, to be an assistant coach at the Stade Louis II.

The duo experienced defeat in their first game as Monaco went down 2-1 to Strasbourg.
