What's the story?

Real Madrid shot-stopper Keylor Navas has provided a key update on his future at the Santiago Bernebeu, revealing that he is ready to fight for his place in the side. The Costa Rica international mentioned that he will decide to hit the exit doors only when he realizes that there are no chances left for him to break into the team again.

In case you didn't know...

Despite having claimed the UEFA Champions League goalkeeper of the season accolade post Real Madrid's third consecutive UCL triumph, the arrival of Thibaut Courtois has pushed him down the pecking order, especially since the arrival of Santiago Solari.

However, he will be looking to fabricate a string of impressive displays between the sticks following Courtois' hip injury, which is sure to keep him out of action for a couple of weeks at least.

The heart of the matter

Navas dismissed rumors that suggested a move to Arsenal or Juventus could be on the cards by signing a fresh deal that will run until 2021.

Upon receiving the Iberoamericana Community Trophy at the National Sports Awards, the 32-year-old proclaimed:

“The day when I realize that I cannot be the first-choice goalkeeper will be the day I leave. That is what I have always worked towards, but after that, there is someone who makes the decisions and it's up to us to train hard and perform well when we get the chance to play."

He continued:

“In the meantime, you have to wait for your turn. We don't know what's going to happen [with Courtois' injury], only the coach knows what the situation is. I am at the coach's disposal 100 per cent - we have to be united.”

What's next?

Navas is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world to have on the bench, and despite the injury sustained by Courtois, Solari shouldn't be too bothered.

The goalie will have his task cut out when Madrid travel to Real Betis on 13 January, before battling it out in the second leg of the round of 16 Copa del Rey against Leganes.
