World Cup: Williamson marks debut with a win

Williamson

We had four stars fighting for a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup over the weekend. Read on to find out how they fared.

Leah Williamson came on as a second-half substitute in England’s 3-0 win over Cameroon on Sunday, ensuring she marked her debut World Cup appearance with a victory.

Steph Houghton opened the scoring in unusual fashion, converting an indirect free-kick from just six yards out, before Ellen White doubled their advantage with a cool finish on the stroke of half time.

Phil Neville’s side continued to dominate play and in the 58th minute they were three goals to the good, courtesy of a first-time effort from Alex Greenwood. Beth Mead was an unused substitute.

Summer signing Leonie Maier didn’t feature for Germany in their comfortable 3-0 win over Nigeria on Saturday.

Alexandra Popp, Sara Dabritz and Lea Schuller were on the scoresheet, while their defence stood strong to keep their fourth clean sheet of the tournament.

Finally, Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was an unused substitute in France’s tightly-contested 2-1 win over Brazil on Sunday.

Goals from Valerie Gauvin and Thaisa took the game to extra-time, before Amandine Henry scored a 106th-minute winner to book their place in the last eight.
