Newcastle signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be bad news for three players

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG has been linked with a move to Newcastle after being shunned at Arsenal.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's fall-out with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has led to the Gabonese international being linked with an exit in the January transfer window. Newcastle are one such club who are interested in a move for Aubameyang given their newfound wealth, and that could spell trouble for their current attacking contingent. Express Sport takes a look at three players who would be affected if Aubameyang joined Newcastle.

Dwight Gayle

Gayle's Newcastle career is already seemingly at an end, and the arrival of Aubameyang would confirm that.

The 32-year-old has only played 28 minutes in the Premier League so far this season, failing to register a goal or assist.

His only start in all competitions was the 0-0 penalty shoot-out loss to Burnley in the Carabao Cup in August; failing to score against a side who have kept just three clean sheets all season.

And Aubameyang's arrival would shove him further down the pecking order.

Joelinton

In all fairness to Joelinton, he has become a player reborn in central midfield for Newcastle in recent weeks.

Having started the season as an attacker - registering one goal in 13 appearances - he was moved to a more central role against Norwich.

Rave reviews have followed the Brazilian since.

However, the arrival of Aubameyang would damage his chances of playing further forward. And Joelinton would have to hope Newcastle do not then make signings in midfield or else he could find himself back out of the team.

Callum Wilson

Wilson is Newcastle's top scorer and star striker, make no mistake.

But his injury woes including the current calf injury he has just picked up could spell trouble for the Coventry-born talisman.

Aubameyang's relatively injury-free status throughout his career could mean he becomes Newcastle's first-choice striker ahead of the ex-Bournemouth man.

If Aubameyang can also rediscover his best goalscoring form at Newcastle, and stay fit, that may not spell good news for Wilson - unless Howe opts to play two up top, though it is unclear how Aubameyang would fare in such a system.

Aubameyang's Arsenal absence explained

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta dropped Aubameyang following a series of disciplinary problems with the Gabonese international.

And previous comments have suggested he may be sold to avoid dressing room angst.

"No he's not available for selection," Arteta said before their game against Leeds in December. "Every time that you are sitting here, you have some challenges.

"You have some brilliant moments and some moments when you have to make decisions.

"I am sitting here to try to make the right decisions every day. My only intention is that - to get the club in the best possible condition, to defend our players and get the best possible results on the pitch that we can.

"It's been challenging because those decisions are tough and not pleasant, but you have to do what you feel is right."
