The Premier League has featured some of the greatest goalkeepers to have graced the game. Peter Schmeichel, Petr Cech, Edwin van der Sar and David Seaman, to name a few, are some of the most renowned individuals to have guarded the sticks in the Premier League.

Premier League has a raft of world-class goalkeepers even today

There is no shortage of world-class goalkeepers in the Premier League even now. Some of them are also the preferred first-choice goalkeepers for their respective countries as well. The high-octane, end-to-end action of the Premier League requires goalkeepers to be on high alert all the time.

They are called into action a lot more regularly than their counterparts in other leagues. Having a solid goalkeeper can be the difference in many tight contests. Without further ado, let's take a look at five of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season.

#5 Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Eyebrows were raised when Arsenal signed Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United last summer for a sum of €28 million. The Gunners already had Bernd Leno and shelling out that much money on a backup goalkeeper seemed a little excessive.

But the 23-year-old has come in and knocked Leno out of the first team and established himself as Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League. Ramsdale has already pulled off several 'save of the season' contenders already and has kept 10 clean sheets in 18 appearances in the league.

He has also made a total of 56 saves in that time. Ramsdale has saved 80.9% of shots he faced this season. However, his distribution has a lot of room for improvement, having completed just 37% of his passes over 40 yards.

#4 Robert Sanchez (Brighton & Hove Albion)

Robert Sanchez is one of the finest shot stoppers in the Premier League right now. The Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper is pretty good at commanding his area. He is also a brave customer who comes out to claim crosses and sweep behind his backline.

Sanchez has kept six clean sheets in the Premier League this season and that's quite good as he is playing for a side like Brighton. He has made 60 saves this term. PSxG is a metric that shows how many goals a goalkeeper has allowed beyond the expected ones.

A positive PSxG shows that the goalkeeper has shown exceptional ability or that he was fortuitous in some way. Sanchez has a PSxG per 90 minutes of +0.03. This means he has let in fewer goals than he was expected to. He has saved 75% of the shots he has faced this term.

#3 Jose Sa (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Jose Sa has been phenomenal for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season. The Portuguese joined Wolves in July 2021 from Olympiacos for a sum of €8 million on a 5-year deal. He was brought in as a replacement for Rui Patricio, who moved to AS Roma the same summer.

Patricio had done a good job for Wolves and living up to those levels would have been commendable enough. But Jose Sa has done that and more. The 29-year-old has been an assured presence between the sticks for Bruno Lage's men.

He has the best save percentage of all goalkeepers in the Premier League. Sa has saved 84% of the shots he has faced in the league this term. He has a PSxG of +0.30, the second highest in the league. Sa has kept eight clean sheets and made 68 saves so far in the 2021-22 season.

#2 David de Gea (Manchester United)

David de Gea had a torrid 2020-21 season. His form had dipped drastically over the past few seasons and his best years seemed to be behind him as he started playing second fiddle to Dean Henderson. But an injury to Deano meant that De Gea was thrust back into the starting lineup at the start of the 2021-22 season.

The Spaniard has rediscovered his form and regained his mojo. He is one of the best shot stoppers the game has ever seen and De Gea has come to Manchester United's rescue an incredible number of times this season.

He has made a whopping 84 saves in the ongoing Premier League campaign. That is 13 more than second-placed Illan Meslier who has made 71 saves. De Gea has kept just five clean sheets but that's largely down to United's poor defensive form.

De Gea has the best PSxG (+0.44) in the league per 90 mins. He has saved 73.4% of shots he has faced this season. He has also saved two penalties this season.

However, the Spaniard is poor at sweeping and his distribution has to improve as well. He is also susceptible to the odd error and that is why he doesn't top this list.

#1 Alisson Becker (Liverpool)

Crystal Palace v Liverpool - Premier League

Alisson Becker has been a steady presence behind Liverpool's backline for several years now. He continues to be extremely good at his job and is one of the most well-rounded goalkeepers in the world. The Brazilian international is excellent at sweeping and shows great command over his box.

The 29-year-old has kept 10 clean sheets but has only had to make 41 saves so far this season. He boasts a PSxG per 90 mins of +0.14 in the Premier League, the fifth highest in the league. Alisson has completed 48.9% of his passes over 40 yards.

He has kept Liverpool in the game on many occasions and his performance last night in a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace has earned him praise from all across the globe.
