Arsenal blasted by Emmanuel Adebayor over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang treatment

ARSENAL star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of his captaincy earlier in January.

Arteta gives update on Arsenal's transfer plans ahead of Deadline Day

Former Arsenal hero Emmanuel Adebayor has blasted Gunners chiefs over their treatment of former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the Gabonese international was stripped of the armband following disciplinary issues.

Adebayor, 37, joined Arsenal from Monaco in January 2005 for a fee of £3million.

The Togolese talisman scored 46 goals in just 104 games at the Emirates, although his efforts didn't result in a trophy at the Emirates.

He left in controversial circumstances to cash-laden Manchester City in July 2009, where he infamously scored against his former side before celebrating by running the length of the pitch in front of them.

Now there is another striking controversy at the Emirates just twelve years later, with Aubameyang being stripped of the captaincy after a string of ambassadorial failures.

And Adebayor has slammed his former club for their treatment of their star man.

"This isn't the first problem that's happened with Arsenal," Adebayor told Sky Sports.

"I know he's definitely going to go through a lot because that's Arsenal for you, you can do whatever you do, they never knew how to forgive.

"He's a strong player, he's a good player, he's a fantastic player and I've sent him a message already.

"We just want him to bounce back because he's an African brother and we want to see him representing Africa like he was before the problem."

Adebayor alluded to his poor treatment at Arsenal as the reason Aubameyang won't end up playing for the Gunners again.

"At Arsenal? I don't think so. It happened to me, also, not in the same way, but I would be surprised," he added.

"He's a great player, so let's see how it ends up."

Aubameyang has since been linked with a move away from the club, despite securing a bumper contract in September 2020.

He still has 18 months left on his contract, meaning Arsenal could find a suitor as early as this month in order to free up wages.

Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr reportedly bid £7m for his services in a loan-to-buy offer last week.

And the money could be used to fund a move for Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic.
