Tomiyasu and Tierney join Partey at London Colney

Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu should return to London Colney today having been released early from international duty by Scotland and Japan respectively.

Tierney sustained a head injury in his country’s defeat of Ireland on Saturday and was substituted in line with concussion protocols. While the problem isn’t thought to be serious it has been enough to rule him out of the Nations League decider with Ukraine.

The left-back already featured in a 3-0 win over Ukraine last week.

Tomiyasu played 90 minutes of a friendly against the USA as Japan came out victorious 2-0 in Germany.

In a statement, the Japan FA said the right-back had subsequently withdrawn from the squad to face Ecuador tomorrow “due to club circumstances”.

Given the 23-year-old’s recent injury history it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Arsenal had pre-arranged that the player didn’t feature twice in a row.

We also know that Thomas Partey returned to London from France after withdrawing late in the day from the Ghana team that went on to lose against Brazil.

He was experiencing discomfort in one of his knees and the Gunners requested he jump on a plane so he can be fully assessed ahead of the north London derby.

Knowing Mikel Arteta he’ll play his cards close to his chest when he’s quizzed on team news later in the week. At this point, we just have to keep our fingers crossed that everyone is fine.

UPDATE from Arsenal:

Kieran Tierney has returned to the club from international duty with Scotland. Our defender is back as a precaution after being substituted due to sustaining a head injury whilst playing for Scotland in their UEFA Nations League fixture against the Republic of Ireland.

As the article says, it’s “fingers crossed” time now. At least none of the three can get injured in a competitive game prior to the Sp*rs meeting. We must hope for the best as we’ll need as strong a team as possible for the North London derby which is likely to be a very tough game.

*another competitive game

T.A.

Unless they get a “knock” in training. When will we ever have a fully fit squad in a NLD?

Boy Bastin

Yes, there’s always that to consider as well of course. Best not to think about it though.

We’ve now got several injury-prone players that are important (Tierney, Partey and Zinchenko) so it’s unlikely we’ll have them all available together for that many games, let alone NLDs. It’s where squad strength and depth (or lack of it – we don’t know for sure yet) will play a big part this season. We may get a major test of it vs. Sp*rs.

T.A.

You forgot Tomiyasu and ESR. It is worrying.

Boy Bastin

Yes, there’s always the dangers of training to consider but let’s not think about that. We seem to be “collecting” players who are injury-prone and so are absent on a pretty regular basis (something that’s unlikely to improve) so a “full strength” starting eleven may be less and less frequent in PL games generally.

A Different George

Lloris is injured though I don’t know if he will be back against us. He was crucial for them against Leicester–certainly the man of the match in the first half. (The final score was completely deceptive–Leicester, as they have been doing all season simply gave up in the second half.)

TP is needed especially, he boosts our chances of points when he plays. The other two are great players too, would be happy to see either/both in the team.

We need to set a marker down versus Sp*rs.

Horse breath

If they can take 2 of 4 points in the next games sp**s and the mug smashers I think will be ok. Lose one or both and the pitchforks will be out again 😂 win both and there will be uproar at the FA.

3 points against Sp*rs and a draw against Liverpool would be a decent return.

After each of those two fixtures, we play Bodo/Glimt, so Mikel could practically split the first 11’s into two.

Ozzie

I’d happily take 0 from Liverpool as long as we get 3 off Sp*rs.

Ozzie

Oops I seem to be a minority here. Let’s just get all 6 points and done with it.

One day, far far into the future, we will start a big game with a fully fit squad, and the opposition will have 2-3 key players missing. I won’t hold my breath though. Its been at least 10 years since I saw this miracle happen. Im used to being handicapped.

Daveo

you’re in the wrong multiverse for that brother…

On a bright note, Matt Turner looked good as Japan peppered the absolute shit out him the other night.

Boy Bastin

Good for him. It looks like the extra attention the coaching staff are paying him is beginning to show rewards. I’m still inclined to reserve judgement until we see him up against PL sides though. Games against F C Zurich and Japan are one thing, but the general level of PL teams is another matter really. That’s not to say he won’t be up to it, of course but we won’t know ’til we know.

Gandalf's Kebab

It’s great to see that our boys are less likely to come back ragged from internationals; something has changed with our ‘flex’ and we (or someone behind the scenes) might deserve more than a bit of credit for that.

Momozemio

And Ramsdale being rested again…. 🤔🤐??
Hopefully it’s only due to Southgate’s lack of competence and not to a training injury!!

Gunner J

May I please join them too at London Conley?

Mentalista

Is your name Joey?

Emi Rates

Apart from being glad the lads have come out of this latest interlull relatively unscathed I’m also very much looking forward to the return of real football after what has been an unnecessarily long and quite frustrating break.

Ozzie

Oh Tierney! Put your coat on or you’ll catch a cold.

chepetin

Surely he doesn’t own a coat, does he?

He is so cool that cold weather puts on a coat when it encounters him

Teryima Adi

Club power at work here.😜
