World Cup Winner set to be named new Arsenal club captain

Arsenal will shortly announce who will take hold of the captains armband in the wake of Mikel Arteta's departure, with Per Mertesacker the likely candidate ahead of defensive partner Laurent Koscielny and veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech (via The Sun). Mertesacker captained the side for most of the last two seasons with Arteta struggling for fitness and form, and the Germany World Cup winner is highly regarded on and off the pitch by his teammates for his leadership qualities and vital experience he brings to the dressing room.
