Arsene Wenger seeks to bolster Arsenal's defence with summer move for Manchester United's Chris Smalling

Arsène Wenger is considering a renewed £12million bid for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling this summer. Wenger, the Arsenal manager, will step up his long-standing interest in Smalling as he prepares to recruit a new centre-half for next season. Arsenal are aware that the England international will only have 12 months left on his contract at Old Trafford after this campaign and it is understood no talks have yet been held over an extension. With uncertainty surrounding the future of Per Mertesacker, who could be moved on this summer, Smalling is emerging as an attractive target for Wenger as he will also boost Arsenal's homegrown quota.
