Mkhitaryan was a Metaluruh Donetsk player when the pair's relationship started. But when club owner, Oleg Mkrtchyan, sold another of Seluk's clients to Spartak Moscow for €8m (6.9m) the pair fell out. Seluk also had conflict with the Armenian football federation where Mkhitaryan’s mother worked. These incidents meant the duo decided to part ways when the midfielder was a Shakhtar player.
