On this day in History [15 April]: 96 Liverpool fans tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.

April 15 1989 seemed like just another day of good old footy where Liverpool were to play against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup 1988-1989 semi-final match, with the Hillsborough Stadium playing host. However, the day goes down as one of the darkest in the history of English football as a crash in the stadium resulted in the death of 96 supporters, with numbers of up to 766 being taken in with injuries. Given the magnitude of the match considering both teams were at their peaks, an ensuing influx of supporters caused the Leppings Lane stand – which was specifically allocated for the Liverpool supporters – to crumble down.
