Arsenal wanted to sign in-form UCL attacker who is still available for £26.5m

As reported by CalcioMercato, Arsenal were interested in signing Napoli forward Dries Mertens during the summer transfer window. What's the story? The Gunners didn't do a whole lot of spending before the start of this season but did strengthen their attack with the acquisition of Alexandre Lacazette. It seems though that Wenger was interested in bringing another striker to the Emirates in the summer. CalcioMercato say the Arsenal boss was interested in bringing Belgian international Dries Mertens to the club, before he eventually signed a contract extension at his current club Napoli.
